Moore, William (I2696)

149 According to Heather Carr nee Smythson, she married Baumgarte. He went to bed at nights with a revolver under his pillow in case she did not fancy being a good wife. Later on she was divorced, opened a dressmaking business, but found the customer s were non-payers. She answered an ad for a house keeper to William Briggs - a widower. They had a child Eric, and two years after that "the family all got together and implored him to marry her to legitimise the child. They married. Toured the world.

It seems she was reasonably well off after her divorce and employed two servants herself, (she kept one Emily E Johnson after she married William Briggs) so not sure the housekeeper story is quite true, but she did meet and marry William Briggs. At the time of the 1901 census Ada was going under the name of Margaret Tree and living at William's address at marriage of 22 Brunswick Square (house sitting for William or did he use her address for Banns ??). Don't know why 'Margaret' but 'Tree' could be a pun on Baumgarte which in German means tree garden.
Not convinced that Eric Clive was William Briggs son, he goes under the name of Eric Clive Springett later on and is not acknowledged as a child of William Briggs in his will, in fact he is left just a modest bequest along with Ada's other daughter Gladys from her previous marriage to Baumgarte. Don't know exactly when Eric was born as can't find birth cert under Briggs, Springett or Tree.(after 1901 census but before 1907 when Ada married William). Eric seems convinced he was born in Bombay, India around 1901. He refers to William Briggs as 'guardian' or 'uncle', not father or even step father.
Eric's gravestone in Canada, had a note that he was born 14 Mar 1901 in Bombay India, the UK 1901 census was on 31st Mar 1901surely not enough time to get back to the UK - could he not be Daisy's son? Adopted?
Daughter Gladys goes to America in 1914 under the name of Tree with an acting company and stays in New York, makes a visit home in 1921 and at some point marries James Sharp.
William and Ada (or Margaret as she is travelling under) certainly did see the world, there are several passenger listings of them throughout the 1920's and 30's;
1924 from Quebec, Canada, 1931 from West Indies and 1932 another West Indies Cruise.

Birth registration: Ada Springett Mar 1867 Medway 2a 414
Birth Cert:
15 Feb 1867, King Street, Rochester, Kent. Mother, Elizabeth Ellen Springett, no fathers name.

1867 birth registered as Ada Springett, as Lizzie was not married.
1881 census, boarding school, Heene House, Heene, Sussex, aged 14.
1891 census age 23 born Rochester with husband Bernhard and 7 month old daughter Gladys M Baumgarte in Merton.
1901: Her Daughter Gladys aged 10 was staying with her grandmother.
1901 census going under the name of Margaret Tree aged 34 living on own means born Rochester, Kent with 2 servants, one being Emily E Johnson (32 born Deptford, Kent) at 22 Brunswick Square, Bloomsbury, London.
1911 census Step daughters Elsie 21 and Constance 20 are at the house at 45 Bedford Square, London and the census has been filled in and signed by the housekeeper Emily E Johnson (42 born Deptford, Kent). No sign of William and Ada Daisy.
It is possible that William and Ada Daisy were away on their travels, possibliy taking 16 yr old Winifred (or she's away at school) and small boy Eric with them.
