A letter in 1995 by a descendent Joan talks about a great slump in Manchester, bringing the family to the East of London. The Lancashire cotton famine (1861 - 1865) was a depression in the textile industry in northwest England, brought about by the American Civil War. After the worst, he returns to Blackburn.

Another reason he came south again could be that he got into a partnership with a declared bankrupt, Melville Hin in the managership of the Park Theatre, Liverpool, Lancs. He too was asked to declare his assetts before the judge. All in the London Gazette (Issue 21887 p1931, 27 May 1857) details given as 'Montague Portius Smythson at present and for two weeks now past residing at 74 Finch Street, for ten months immediately previous thereto residing Grey Street, Toxteth Park, and for six weeks immediately previous thereto in Dexter street, Toxteth Park, all in the borough of Liverpool county of Lancaster'.

Montague Smythson, reference in a book ' Pen and Pencil Pictures of Old Bradford' about eminent Victorians in Bradford. Found on the internet via Genuki

The book doesn't tell us a lot about Montague -
      page 143 -
"Mr. Mosley found it desirable to introduce new actors occasionally. In 1850, Mr. Montague Smythson succeeded Mr. Henry Loraine in the leading roles, and a very painstaking and competent actor he proved himself to be."

      page 144-
Most of these pages are about another actor Mr. J.D. Stoyle -
The book quotes a letter this actor wrote -
"I was very young when I first became a member of the Bradford Circuit as it was then called, and was proud of my position as first low comedian in a company among which are such artists as Lysander Thompson, Montague Smythson, William Belford........... and other inimitable performers who made up one of the best companies then in the provinces . . . . . ."

      The Era (National Newspaper Archive):
Lots of Adverts, reviews etc from 1840's to 1870's. A selection on file.
He was considered a great tragic actor at his peak in the 1850 & 60's, got great reviews, followed in his father's footsteps (more successfully as an actor), his wife Amelia appeared with him often and they seem to have had a productive, fairly successful, if disruptive, life together and with their children. Acted all over the country but had a special relationship with the industrial north "Bradford Circuit".

So sad his second marriage failed.

He spent the last (at least) 10 years of his life in the Cheshire County Asylum as a lunatic.
