Baptised 21 May 1815 Sarah Matilda Salway daughter of John Salway, currier & Elizabeth Salway of Bow Street, in margin born 7 Feb 1810.

An 'Aunt Matilda Hards' is mentioned in the Will of Helen Jane Smythson and also a Gabriel Hards is one of the witnesses to William Benjamin Smythson's marriage in 1885. Could Sarah Matilda Salway have married a Gabriel Hards?

      Yes.

Marriage Register (UK, Foreign & Overseas Registers of British Subjects 1627-1965):
      British Embassy, Paris.
      7 Jun 1839
Gabriel Hards of the Parish of Kingston Upon Thames, bachelor to Sarah Matilda Sallway of same parish, spinster.
No occupations given & witnesses are the same as everyone elses, ie Embassy staff.

They obviously had some doubts about their marriage validity because they got married again in 1847!

nb. Basing Place is where Gabriel & Sarah Matilda's daughters were born & died in 1842-44, could 'Mary Sallways' be Matty Sallway. They had already had a 'marriage' in Paris, but still going by her maiden name, so may be it wasn't actually legal? Bigamous?
